This book was part of Scholastic Press’ program to appeal to younger readers fascinated by all things military. The series features include photos, diagrams, glossary, and resources and was written to conform to Grades 5-8 comprehension standards. In addition to clearly explaining how these military systems operate and why they are important on the modern battlefield, I attempted to incorporate military history into the storyline, explaining lessons from the past that led to the creation and implementation of each system. Much effort was spent describing the ways nations respond to forces of unity and diversity affecting order and security, the role of technology in communications, transportation, weapons development as it contributes to/helps resolve conflicts, examining the influence of culture on technological choices/advancements such as warfare, and exploring causes, effects, and solutions to persistent global issues.
