About

Welcome, dear reader, to a dream come true … the first ever ongoing, original comic series by yours truly.  Welcome to … THE VOID!

Readers of my blog are well aware of my appreciation for comics as an art form and a literary guide.  I learned to read thanks to Stan Lee and Gardner Fox in the 60s, so the 4-color world of comics has been a constant source of companionship, guidance and entertainment for all of my life.  I’ve dreamed of creating my own characters and sharing their exploits with readers like you for more than 40 years.  And now, those dreams are becoming reality.

Last year (2009) saw my first ever fictional novel, the crime drama/supernatural thriller, I Know Why the Dogwoods Blush (Outskirts Publishing).  Thanks to the positive response to that book, I have begun scripting part #2 to that overarching storyline, The Dove of War, planned for an October 2011 release.  And until then?  We have … THE VOID!

Intended to be a bridge between I Know Why the Dogwoods Blush and Dove of War, Void is set in modern day London.  Who, or what, is Void?  That’s what I intend to explore with you in the months ahead.  I am committed to sharing Void with you for this coming year, but after that?  It’s going to be up to you.  I do hope it finds an audience and that people will check it out, then keep coming back.  It’s free, it’s easy to find, and … hopefully … it will be compelling.

I lived in London for a year and fell in love with the city’s history, including those GREAT ghost stories!  Not only does London have a rich true history, it’s been the site of myriad fictional tales of horror as well.  It’s the perfect setting for the story I want to tell … and the character I want to unleash on fans of horror/thriller/mysteries.

In a homage to those great black & white horror magazines of the 1960s and 70s (Eerie, Creepy, Vampirella, Savage Sword of Conan, etc) Void will also follow that format.  I like the look and feel of B&W, in comics and movies.  I hope you will, too.

So come enjoy a Halloween greeting from Void and the lovely Georgia Fontaine, then stay with us for what I hope will be a great ride.  While I hope you’ll like it, I GUARANTEE that you WILL be surprised!  Is Deacon Void an angel?  Is he the Devil?  Or is he something else?  Let’s find out together!

VOID is 100% my own character, concept and creation.  But I’m no artist, so to bring him to life in a comic format, I will bring in multiple artists to share their own unique look, feel, and characterization of our grumpy and mysterious detective from London’s East End.

Look for a new page of art and story each Tuesday and Thursday, right here.  From time to time, I’ll toss you something extra … some new art, a sneek peak, background info, etc.  In time, I may also publish a running side story set in the Void universe for those who may enjoy reading but are not huge fans of comics.  In short, I want you to come here often for FUN!  Because that’s what it is to me.

So there you have it, folks!  Win, lose or draw, I hope you’ll check us out and let me know what you think.  If you do decide to join us on this ride, let me offer this word of caution:

Beware the swirling mists that rise in the darkness and cling to the very air you breathe like a thing alive.  There are things … evil, hurtful things … that dwell within the dark corners of the forgotten streets of modern day London.  Most of you will simply bolt your windows and lock your doors, hoping to never encounter those “things” that lurk in the abyss with names unspoken by mortal tongue.  But if you decide to follow us, then consider yourself to be very brave … for there are few among us with the courage to enter …

THE VOID!

Congratulations, Bill! I dig the title “Void”– it’s compelling, original and has an air of dark mystery to it. The art looks terrific and I suspect your title character will have a whole kaboodle of secrets we’ll be unravelling as the series goes by. It’s a provocative beginning and I’ll be following with great interest to see where the talented Bill Cain and his
oh-so-promising creation Void are gonna take us.

Excelsior!

Stan

What can possibly be said after getting a comment from the immortal Stan Lee? Thanks, Stan! You have been constantly inspiring me for all of my life and today, you did it again. You truly are … THE MAN! Thank you so much for your encouragement. Now, sit back and, to use one of your phrases, “let the wonderment begin!” :)

Great job Bill – fantastic stuff. I love the way the story is developing. My daughter, Diva, thinks it’s cool (and somewhat spooky)to see Peter Drissell in a whole new way!

Your Friend, the other Peter Drissell

Thank you, Peter!!!! I am thrilled to have the “other” Peter Drissell checking in on Void and his “alter ego!” Void has no idea who’s checking up on him, does he? :) Thanks again and I hope you continue chasing Void, both as a reader and as an investigative reporter! :)
