04/08: Behind the Door!
As a kid, I worried many times that something bad was hiding in my closet. I could never rest if the closet door was open. In 1968, (age 9) my buddy, David Pope, gave me a scary comic published by Dell Comics titled Ghost Stories. It scared the heck out of me! While the last story, The Monster of Dread End, is considered one of the best horror comic tales of all time, the opening segment, The Door, scared me the most. It’s the inspiration for this segment of the Void Universe.

The opening page to "The Door," from Dell Publishing, "Ghost Stories," 1968. This tale stimulated my imagination (and scared the heck out of me) 43 years ago!
What’s going to happen to this poor, desperate lady seeking a job? We’ll find out in our next installment!

I’m truly scared now. Always hated my closet as a child . . . and the shadows cast upon the wall from the tree branch outside my window and the street lamp outside. Good thing I had a really good teddy bear to squeeze the stuffing out of.
As a kid, I always reasoned that if I closed the closet door and never let my feet or hands dangle over the side of the bed, I’d be okay! But when shows like Night Gallery started, it was all over! Hmmm. I wonder what’s REALLY on the other side of that door? I’ll bet we find out one day!
Hope it’s nothing with 8 legs and large fangs.
Much, much worse!
*shiver* Okay, where is my teddy bear?
Bill, I am continually amazed at how you tie it all together.
Your friend,
Alex
Thanks, Alex. Coming from a true pro like you, I really appreciate it! And I hope to keep you guessing over and over again as the story of VOID unfolds. No matter what you THINK you know, you don’t! (I hope)! Stay warm out there!
wouldn’t mind getting the rest of this comic I had as a kid – I found dread end bit but have none of werewolf spider or the door or demon horse comic
You must have a reprint that only published the acclaimed “Dread End” tale. You could probably find the entire comic for sale on E-Bay pretty cheap. It’s definitely worth adding to your collection! Thanks for checking in!
