5/6: The Face of Void – DARKMAN!
Readers of VOID already know all about Darkman from my previous post regarding his influence on the character in general. You can link to that segment below:
Influences on Void: DARKMAN!
My friend, artist Eryck Webb (whose work you will see for Void’s “special” posts on Halloween and New Year’s Day) told me, “Void is a fun character to draw. My inspiration to draw him is a mix between Darkman and Spawn!” I heartily concur, Eryck!
Darkman has such a stunning visual, I could not pass on the opportunity to present him again as an inspiration of Void’s “look.” As a reminder, the bandages were my original concept for Deacon Void, but now those bandages reside beneath the mask. What lies on the other side of the bandages? Ah, that’s what we are here to “uncover!”
Not only is the “mummy in a trenchcoat” look so obvious here, this post also gives me a chance to showcase original art by my friend, Jason Flowers (B&W above). Jason’s art will grace the cover to Void, issue #3, “Suffer A Witch!” Look for that cover to be published right here on December 6, 2011! You’ll love it! (You’ll love the art for sure and I HOPE you’ll love the story as well)!

Yikes! Had to look twice to see it’s the SAME face! {{{{shivers}}}}}
This “look” is instantly recognizable and I wanted it for two reasons … the bandages symbolize pain/suffering as well as a sense of danger. Combine it with the “ancient” look from the Mummy & that’s exactly what I’m trying to portray in VOID. And the bad attitude he carries? That’s for next week’s inspiration and my final feature on creating Void’s “look!”
