Mirror, Mirror! – A BONUS Feature from … VOID!
“Reflections” art by Rob Summers.
Like so many times before, he lit a candle to remember her, then cast a sorrowful glance into the mirror. He considered removing the bandages to look for any change, but decided there was no need. Even with the wrap in place, he could easily see the stain from his soul that bled into what was once his face. He had formerly considered himself a great warrior, a servant to His Majesty the King, a noble gentleman devoid of fear. Now he feared everything. Now he considered himself “great” at nothing.
A wise sage once advised him that a man cheated is lost. And yet, modern “moralists” claim that cheaters never win! Which is correct? With a heave of resignation, Deacon Void weighed the pain of his conclusion … no matter whether you are the breaker or the broken, your punishment is the same. And when you are both? Atonement may simply be unattainable.
He leaned in to blow out the candle, then recalled that he had no breath to expel. With yet another reminder of his lost humanity churning in his mind, he extinguished the candlelight with his stiff fingers.
“Forgive me,” he whispered soft and low. “Even if God does not forgive my heinous sin, I pray forgiveness from you, my dear, sweet … Susan.”
It would soon be light outside. Time to go and prepare for his meeting with him. He could already sense even greater danger lurking on the horizon.
In the darkness, he could still see his reflection in the cracked and stained mirror. He thought of the child. The image grew darker still!
“How appropriate,” he muttered. “My face is still visible, even in the darkness.”
And ever must it be so! For beyond the dawn lies the day. Beyond the day lies the dusk. Beyond the dusk lies the darkness. And beyond the darkness lies … the VOID!

He is here to attone for whatever sin he believes he committed. Saving us is just a bonus. As long as he believes what he’s doing can hopefully attone for this sin … as long as he believes … there is still hope. Even in the VOID. May God Bless and Keep him safe, focused, alert and alive for the coming battles.
I’m sure Deacon Void appreciated your kind wishes, Tisa. Whatever he did in the past must have been REALLY bad! But as much as I’d like to know what he did, I’m even more curious about a name he dropped today. I wonder about the person named … Susan?
Susan … his beloved. That is my guess. As well as the child they had together.
Makes sense. I wonder if whatever bad thing he did is tied in to Susan and the mysterious “child?” I’m also wondering about his face? Looking for a change, he said? Oh well, I guess we’ll find out soon enough!
Our souls reflect the real person within. May it be true here too.
I hope you are correct, Eva. But based on what we saw here today, his reflection does not look so good!
I can already that I can be easily hooked by this story… now I NEED to know…
FYI, be aware that this “teaser” takes place just after the events of issue #2 and set the stage for Void to meet “him” in issue #3 (which begins 13 December … the original, full-color cover will post tomorrow, 8 December). To get the full impact of the story as it progresses, go back and read the 1st 2-issues … you’ll be glad you did once the mysteries start getting solved!
