Wide Sargasso Sea, novel by Jean Rhys, published in the year 1966. A highly-acclaimed work that is a work of fiction. It borrows its subject and the main character of the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
The story traces how Antoinette Mason (known in Jane Eyre as Bertha) as the West Indian who marries an unknown man in Jamaica and then returns for his family in England. In a marriage that is not love-filled and living in a harsh environment, Antoinette goes mad and often commits violent acts.
Her husband has her locked in the attic of the house in Thornfield. Only him along with Grace Poole, the attendant who he has appointed to take care of her, are aware of Antoinette’s existence.
